About Kady Evanyshyn

Canadian mezzo-soprano Kady Evanyshyn was recently named one of CBC Music’s “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30.” Praised for her “beautiful, powerful voice and wonderful expressiveness” (Opernglas), she has been recognized for her “luminous mezzo-soprano” and “psychologically well-balanced acting” (ORF Kultur), with Opernwelt highlighting her “fervor and impressive authenticity.”

In recent seasons, Kady has made debuts as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro at Opernhaus Zürich, Charlotte in Werther at Bregenzer Festspiele, and Hänsel at the Verbier Festival. A member of the Staatsoper Hamburg ensemble, Kady has been with the company since 2019, joining as a studio member and remaining as an ensemble artist from 2022. Her roles there include Meg Page (Falstaff), Annio (La clemenza di Tito), Fjodor (Boris Godunov), Siébel (Faust), Tisbe (La Cenerentola), Amore in the world premiere of Sciarrino’s Venere e Adone under Kent Nagano, Glascha (Kát’a Kabanová), Zaide (Il Turco in Italia), Laura (Luisa Miller), Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), and Agnes in Unseres kleines Scheisskaff – Fucking Åmål, a role that received critical acclaim.

Ms. Evanshyan’s 2025/26 season highlights in Hamburg include debuts in Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri with Tobias Kratzer and Omer Meir Wellber, Mahler’s Die Unruhenden in Christoph Marthaler’s new production, and Dritte Magd in Dmitri Tcherniakov’s Elektra. She also reprises Flora in La Traviata, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, and 2. Dame in Die Zauberflöte, and will make her Teatro La Fenice debut as Amore in Venere e Adone.

A dedicated performer of contemporary music, she was the first singer to perform at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, premiering Bruce Adolphe’s I Saw How Fragile and Infinitely Precious the World Is. She has premiered Stefano Gervasoni’s Drei Grabschriften at Focus Festival, performed Claire in the West Coast premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain, and appeared in Berio’s Folk Songs at Alice Tully Hall with AXIOM under Jeffrey Milarsky. Other highlights include works by Druckman and Edgar David Grana, and collaborations with the Kronos Quartet and the ÆON Music Ensemble.

Kady made her Carnegie Hall recital debut as part of Renée Fleming’s 2020 Song Studio. She has been recognized as a semifinalist in the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition and a prizewinner in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Gulf Coast Region, 2023), establishing herself as a rising talent on the international stage.

Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Kady holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Edith Wiens and received the John Erskine Prize and Novick Career Advancement Grant. She is also an alumna of the Music Academy of the West, Aspen Music Festival, and Classic Lyric Arts, and has been supported by the Manitoba Arts Council and the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation.

"Kady Evanyshyn enchants as Charlotte. From coquettish to dramatic, her mezzo-soprano delivers all the colors between lightness and grand outburst."
